It's spring time! In fact this pass Sunday was the first official day of spring! Which means we are all breaking out the seed packets from last year, ordering new seeds and flipping through catalogs to fill up the rows, garden boxes, buckets or whatever your garden method is. I must be honest, as pumped as I am about everything coming up and the farm flourishing (see what I did there?) I am not looking forward to summer, your girl and heat are not friends! Enough blabbering from me let's get to the exciting topic at hand, planning your spring garden.
Planning your spring garden for the first time or one hundredth time can be majorly overwhelming I like to break it down into 5 simple steps.
  1. Dream - Choose your style and layout.
  2. Pick what to grow - Choose your crops that work for your lifestyle.
  3. Location - location meaning 2 things, find your zone and where your garden will be.
  4. Prep the soil - Amending the soil is important, the soil needs to be prepare to feed your plant babies!
  5. Get planting! - what are you waiting for? Get those seeds the ground and watch them flourish!
I will be breaking down these  points 2 points per blog post so stay tuned, I am pumped!
When helping my amazing clients plan their garden, I want them to fall in love with the planning process, so we go back to the senior year of high school; we create a vision board. This can be done digitally or you can do it the good old fashioned way with Eimers glue, construction paper and cardboard; oh and you can't forget the scissors! So when planning your vision board you want to think what is my ideal garden, that can practically happen with lifestyle I live. We want to fill the vision board with  the plants we want to grow the setup we want to have, the colors we ant  in our garden and the likes. And we cannot forget the most important part of the  vision board and that is the budget. Yes, I said budgeting ha, welcome to adulthood! But on a serious note budgeting is not that hard in terms of gardening, we want to create the dream garden without breaking the bank.
Point number 2
          - Pick what to grow - Choose your crops that work for your lifestyle -
Fun story when Izzie first started planning her farm I was 100% sure that I was destined to be a cut flower farmer of all things! But as you can see now I am not a flower farmer, I do grow them on the side though. Why don't I grow flowers? Because they were too high maintenance for my lifestyle. When choosing crops, you want to pick ones that work best for the lifestyle you live. For example, dahlias the cut flower would not be the best option if you work a full time job and are a student they require too much time, however collard greens would be a great option as they are pretty straight forward and low maintenance crop.
So friends lets get that vision board started, and pick your crops! Don't forget to budget, it's a very important step.
You can book a consultation with me anytime to help you get a head start on your gardening journey, I am so excited to help you Flor•ish.

Happy Flor•ishing,
OXO Izzie

THE SECRET OF BASIL

Basil is one of my favorite herbs to grow. It is SUPER easy to grow and there are so many varieties. I literally love it so much. Ok so what do you do when you have bunches of basil and you’re tired of pesto? YOU MAKE BASIL TEA (!)
Did you know basil tea is good for anxiety?! I think all of us are feeling the stress these days! Which is probably why I planted so much basil!

Health Benefits of Basil:
  • Eases anxiety
  • High in antioxidants & antibiotics
  • Great for Arthritis & Fibromyalgia
  • Helps insomnia
  • And so much more!

How To Make Basil Tea
  1. 1 part water
  2. A handful of dried basil leaves
  3. 1TSB Honey

Directions:
Bring water to a boil, and pour over basil leaves in a mug. Allow to seep for 5-10 minutes (depending on desired strength) Sweeten with Honey if desired. (Honey is also known to be a relaxant.) And enjoy!

Long story short, if you are tired of pesto, make some basil tea — I promise that you won’t regret it.

Happy tea drinking,
Izzie

A Letter To Those Who Struggle

To the wildflower out there, somewhere in the world, who feels like all her petals have been taken. To the bird or butterfly, who's lost their wings to fly and feel like it'd be better if they died. To the soul who's lost in darkness, waiting for the walls to cave in. To the one who has abusive scars you can't seem to get past, that have ruined every bit of your life. To the daughter or son, who feels like a disgrace to their family in every way.

To the one who's lost the dearest person on earth to them, and you're wondering how you're going to keep living. You just want to end it all.

I want you to know you are not alone. You're not a disappointment or a disgrace. You're a warrior. Yes, you are strong. And I want you to know how beautiful you are. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I promise one day you'll get back your petals and bloom into a flower most spectacular; you'll get back your wings and sore so high they will never know how you learned to fly. You'll learn to live again even with the missing piece of the person you loved the most.

Those abusive scars that have ruined your life: you will heal from them in time.
To the one who felt like a disgrace, you will see you're nothing but excellence!💪🏽

So please, if you're thinking about ending your life: don't. Suicide is not the way out. Keep fighting and don't fight alone. Get help. Please. We need you here. I need you here.

You. Are. loved.
You. Are. Not. Alone.
So please don't go.

We need you,
Izzie

The Face Behind The Blog

Hi I’m Izzie, the face behind the blog and the basil!
I’m a Caribbean American first-generation micro farmer in the Northern part of the sunshine state of Florida. I started farming in the middle of the pandemic. I tend to be quite the ambitious human in the family, it has been a wild ride but I am very excited for this endeavor. This was my first official growing season as a farmer, but I have had a couple years of experience as a small home gardener. Growing up we always had a small family garden, and guess who hated it?! ME! I was the kid in the family who would have literal tears running down my face when it came time for working in the garden, but if you know my mom you know that was not an excuse she still had me come to the garden with her (Thanks mom haha). I eventually got a liking for it and in the summer time I planted a patch of summer squash and gave the harvest to my music teachers. Then in my early teens I hated it again,I wanted nothing to do with it, I had zero patience like your typical teen. Long story short, a couple years later here I am, with a micro farm, selling produce, while helping you as a garden consultant/coach start your own agriculture journey.
On the list of the many things I am passionate about, Toxin free/ethical living and mental health, is on the top, which I will talk about here on the blog as well.
10 fun facts about me:
  1. I HATE plain potato chips and popcorn, so if I’m eating them check in on ya girl.
  2. I am a classically trained musician (piano and violin) but I enjoy playing various genres.
  3. I am EXTREMELY introverted 97% according to Myers Briggs (don’t get it twisted though, I have great social skills, I just don’t like to utilize them ahah)
  4. I don’t have a favorite color (seriously guys my wardrobe is black, white and blue)
  5. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs that all get along perfectly!
  6. I love to sing, I really love anything with music.
  7. I recently became a minimalist (I LOVE IT)
  8. I despise city life.
  9. I have a dream of going to med school and  becoming a trauma surgeon.
  10. I don’t have a tenth fact hah!

Well I hope I didn’t bore you to death, if you made it to the end you are a real one! Thanks so much for stopping in on my little corner of the internet! I hope we can be friends :) My hope for you is; “May every seed you plant Flor-ish.”

Happy farming,
Izzie
